The Probus Club of St Annes-on-the -Sea

Address by new President, the Reverend Stuart Westley,
at the Annual General Meeting,  25 March 2010

President Stuart commenced his address by stating that, in his opinion, he had had 'greatness thrust upon him' by being elected as President.  Later he referred to the Club’s Constitution in which it states that the Club meets "for fellowship and to foster friendship".  He indicated what many before have stated, in that with such a large club it is difficult to get to know everyone even though, as Vice President, he had shaken hands with almost everyone as they arrived for each weekly meeting.

He talked about having been a member of the Probus Club at Colne in East Lancashire after he retired, before moving to St. Annes.  Coincidentally he was due to go back to and speak to the members of the Colne club on the day after the AGM.

As a widower, he said that he found his days sometimes rather lonely and so he offered an open invitation for members to visit him at his own home during his year of office in order to assist him in getting to know them a little better.

Sadly, President Stuart fell seriously ill during the summer recess and, as a result, has been unable to return to Probus meetings since.   Vice President Harold Stokes stood in throughout Stuart's Presidential Year, which he was therefore very unfortunately unable to enjoy.
