Report from Probus magazine

Autumn 2012

Celebrating 40 years

Founded by the Rotary Club of St Annes-on-the-Sea, the Probus Club of St. Annes-on-the-Sea was born on February 25, 1971.

Sir Herbert Pollard CBE was our first president and was followed by Sir William Cocker OBE from 1972-1978.

About 120 people attended our first meeting at the Lytham St. Annes YMCA and, by 1977, membership had grown to 230.

We meet every week from October to March on Thursday mornings at 10:00am with an average weekly attendance of 90.

We have had many happy social events along the way and most are recorded in our souvenir brochure. One worth mentioning is the 100th birthday of Victor Middleton. Victor gave a full 40 minute talk remembering many things that happened during his long life; this was prior to a celebratory luncheon which was held at The Dalmeny Hotel, Lytham St. Annes.

Previously on a club outing we visited the popular Channel 4 programme 'Countdown' and the rapport between Victor, Des Lynam and Carol Vorderman was screened on his 100th birthday.

A visit to see Concorde, annual Christmas luncheons, annual get-togethers and many more have all been photographed for posterity.

Also in the brochure there are reminiscences from past presidents and life members recollecting outstanding talks and events during their years of office.
Presented over 32 pages, we like to think this is a memorable keepsake for all our members and a ready reference to our activities over the past 40 years.

Our celebration dinner was held at the Bedford Hotel, Lytham St. Annes, on February 24, 2011 which was as close to the inauguration date as we could get. Our souvenir brochure was presented to all main ticket holders on arrival.
In the absence of our president Rev Stuart Westley, who sadly suffered a quite devastating stroke, acting president Harold Stokes welcomed approximately 81 members and guests. Our immediate past president, Rev Robert Wells, said grace.

After a most enjoyable dinner, our special anniversary cake was cut by acting president Harold Stokes and his daughter Gillian.

Entertainment was by Bruce McLaren "Singing Big Band to Broadway". Many photographs were taken and a video was produced by club member Mike Glassock. A good time was had by all.
